In 1633, the first batch of bananas from the Bermuda arrived in the UK and was sold in the shop of herbalist Thomas Johnson. And its name in the previous forty years ago has been spread, then often spelled bonana or bonano, the two words in Spanish only refers to the banana tree. Initially, the British did not eat bananas, but made banana tarts or pies.

Go Bananas!
The colloquial use of bananas for ‘mad, crazy’ is a surprisingly recent development. There is an isolated record of it from the US in the 1930s meaning ‘sexually perverted, degenerate’, but the current usage seems to have originated in US college slang of the mid to late 1960s. It is not clear how it arose. Some connection has been suggested with the earlier slang term banana oil ‘nonsense’, which dates from the 1920s, but since the origins of that too are unknown, the suggestion only pushes the mystery one stage further back.

Since the late nineteenth century, Bananaland became the nickname of Queensland in the Australian population, which was named after the banana is an important crop in the state. The more disrespectful name is banana republic, the phrase created in the thirties of the last century, refers to the United States tropical region of small unstable development of the state, their economy depends mainly on banana exports.
